Hotels in Lima
Hotels in Lima

Located in the northwest part of Ohio, Lima is the county seat of Allen County, Ohio. After being founded in 1831, it was the home of the largest oil field among the states over the last decade of the 19th century. Two major criminal gangs of the Great Depression made appearances in the town. John Dillinger was broken out of the County Jail by his gang, and the Brady Gang robbed a jewelry store. Later in the 20th century, Lenny Bruce performed an act about the locales supposed dourness.

Hammers for Metal Jewelry Making
Hammers for Metal Jewelry Making

It hammer time! I had to say that, sorry. Seriously, though, of all the tools you have in your tool box or at your work bench, hammers can be a metal worker best friend, and they are really essential to the processes of fabricating metal. Both jewelry makers who work with wire and metalsmiths who work with materials such as metal plating use hammers to harden metals, straighten them, or even texture them sometimes. So they are really tools that are considered multi taskers.

While there are a surprising variety of hammers available to jewelers, ranging from size and materials they are made of, I going to cover two of the have hammers in this article. Most jewelry makers will find over time and practice that they may gravitate to other types of hammers, but this is an individual decision based on preference and the type of jewelry you make. Therefore, while I suggest you have a the two hammers I plan to cover here in your tool box a rawhide hammer and a ballpein hammer I also suggest you experiment with other hammers to see how they fit your metal jewelry making needs.

Getting Down to the Nitty Gritty
Getting Down to the Nitty Gritty

Myth of the Exploding Skull

A common misconception is that the head of a burned body will explode if there is no wound or hole in it, much like a microwaved potato with no puncture in the skin. But forensics researcher Elayne Pope quickly deflated this urban legend when she conducted tests on 40 human cadavers. The myth probably arose when firefighters found the fragmented skulls of burn victims, not realizing that the skulls, which have a thin covering of tissue and quickly become brittle from heat, were easily broken by falling debris or water from pumps.

The term ashes is a bit misleading, since what families receive after a cremation isnt a soft powder, but instead a grayish, coarse material, like fine gravel, made from the ground up remains of bones.

In modern crematories, the body is stored in a cool, temperature controlled room until its approved for cremation. A coroner or medical examiner is often required to sign off to make sure no medical investigations or examinations need to be done since, unlike after a burial, the body cant be exhumed once its cremated. The body is prepared by removing pacemakers, which can explode in the heat, prostheses and silicone implants. Radioactive cancer seeds injectable or implantable radioactive isotopes used to treat several types of cancer are also on the removal list. The body is then put into a container or casket made out of flammable materials such as plywood, pine or cardboard. In some countries, workers remove other external items such as jewelry or glasses, while other countries prohibit workers from doing so.

When the incinerator is preheated to about 1,100 degrees Fahrenheit 593 degrees Celsius, the mechanized doors are opened and the container slips quickly from a rack of rolling metal pins into the primary cremating chamber, also referred to as a retort.

Sometimes family members can watch the cremation from a window, or, in cases such as Hindu cremations, a family member can start the fire by pressing a button.

Once the door is sealed, the body is subjected to a jet enginelike column of flame, aimed at the torso. The heat ignites the container and dries the body, which is composed of 75 percent water. As the soft tissues begin to tighten, burn and vaporize from the heat, the skin becomes waxy, discolors, blisters and splits. The muscle begins to char, flexing and extending limbs as it tightens. The bones, which are the last to go, become calcified as they are exposed to the heat and begin to flake or crumble source: Pope.

An average human body takes from two to three hours to burn completely and will produce an average of 3 to 9 pounds 1.4 to 4.1 kilograms of ash. The amount of ash depends usually on the bone structure of the person and not so much their weight source: Ellenberg. A newborn, which has mostly cartilage and very little set bone, might not even leave any remains after cremation.

Etsy Interview with Armychiclyfe
Etsy Interview with Armychic4lyfe

First off, tell me a little bit about yourself. My name is Christine, Im 25 years old, and Im the creator of Armychic4lyfe. I am married to my hero, and my best friend; who is currently deployed. We are stationed in Washington state at the moment.

I started Armychic4lyfe, because being a stay at home mom to a special needs 3 year old meant I didnt have time for a job away from home but needed to find a hobby and a way to bring in a little extra money. I had been selling on Ebay for years, as well as playing around with jewelry making, so when I found out about Etsy it was a no brainer!

I started making hemp jewelry when I was little, but only started playing around with other types of jewelry making about 2 years ago. I knew that I needed a good hobby to entertain me during deployments.

Most of my friends like to scrapbook, but I was always bored easily by scrap booking. Which is why I got into jewelry making. I just bought a few supplies one day and went from there!

I also make cards on occassion, candles wax tarts, and bath products.

When and how did you originally find Etsy?

I honestly cant remember how I found Etsy, but Im pretty sure one of my friends told me about it. I was so excited after I found out about it! I opened a shop right away! My experience selling on Ebay definitely helped prepare me for selling on Etsy, the only big thing I had to learn how to do was take better pictures!

What is unique about Etsy and what about the website do you like the most in regards to your shop?

I love that you can set your own price, have your own avatar/banner, use Paypal, and that its only for handmade items, vintage items, and supplies! I love making handmade buying handmade!

What inspires you the most in regards to your creations?

Most of my inspiration comes from my experiences in life especially from being prior service Army being a mom and from my friends and family. Most of my jewelry is military inspired made for other military wives.

I also love to make unique one of a kind pieces from upcycled broken jewelry when possible.

What is your favorite piece youve created and why?

I dont think I really have a favorite piece, but I do love how my hand knotted pearl necklaces look. I rarely make them since they take so long to make, but I love that simple elegant look of a pearl necklace.

What do you want to accomplish with your online shop?

I simply want to be able to create. And to be able to afford to keep creating! I would love to be able to make enough off Etsy to make a living creating.

I also want to be able to keep creating unique pieces in Armychic4lyfe that are both affordable, unique, and beautiful.

Do you have any new creations in the works? If so, what can shoppers expect to see from you soon?

Im always working on new items, but right now Im listing items daily for the $1 Back to School Sale that Im having. It runs August 1st thru August 15th at Armychic4lyfe.

Where can readers find out about more information regarding your jewelry and other creations and possible special offers including additional websites, blogs, facebook, etc?

Published by Rachel B.

Rachel B. is a college student from the Midwest with a passion for political and local issues. Her writing has been featured on the front page of Yahoo! View profile
